What is a sabbatical?
A sabbatical is an extended period of rest, rejuvenation, and reconnection with God and with family, and it's considered a "best practice" in healthy churches to send pastors on sabbaticals periodically. There are studies that show sabbaticals result in greater health and greater non-staff leadership involvement in churches that follow this practice.

Our church grants pastors a sabbatical after every 6 years of service, up to 12 months (6 paid).

Why is Pastor Josh going on sabbatical?
There is no crisis in Pastor Josh's life necessitating this sabbatical. Instead, we're making a long-term investment into the health and vitality of Josh & his family. We want the next 10 years of his life and ministry here at The Crossing to be the most fruitful. This sabbatical is meant to result in his thriving, the health of his family, and even the health & vitality of our church as a whole.

How long is Pastor Josh on sabbatical?
From June 1 to September 2, 2018.

What will he be doing?
He will do a research project by visiting other churches each week, and interviewing pastors to learn more about their best practices in evangelism and discipleship for a cross-cultural, cross-generational ministry. He'll be using what he learns to further develop our own models of ministry, and continue handling some of the strategic & administrative planning for next year.

He will also spend his time resting, recharging, and being with his family. Much of the sabbatical will be spent away from The Crossing to allow Pastor Josh to disconnect from the pressures of ministry.

Is he coming back?
Absolutely yes! Pastor Josh will NOT be seeking any other position or speaking at any other ministries throughout this sabbatical. He's getting equipped and renewed in ways that he wouldn't be able to during his normal ministry schedule.

What is the plan while he's gone?
Things will look much the same at The Crossing. We have gifted pastors who will continue to preach the gospel on Sundays. We also have some exciting guest speakers coming to bless us with their ministry, and you won't want to miss it! Church functions will continue, and our talented leaders will continue to serve us in the day-to-day operations of a growing, healthy church.

Can I contact Pastor Josh while he is away?
We ask that you would respect this time of rest for Pastor Josh. Please don't anticipate a response from his email or Facebook.

What if I have spiritual questions?
Spiritual leadership at The Crossing has always been carried out by all our leaders. Our ministry leaders, small group leaders, and staff are here to love and serve you in your spiritual growth. If there is any spiritual need you have, we hope you will begin by contacting your ministry leader or small group leader.

What can I do to be supportive?
Pray for Pastor Josh and his family -- that this time would be refreshing for them, and that Josh would experience rest for his soul, intimacy with our Heavenly Father, and growth as a pastor. Equally valuable, continue to take steps in your own spiritual growth and discipleship, and love Jesus more.
